Description

Analysis NoteAgglutination activity is expressed in μg/ml and is determined from serial dilutions in phosphate buffered saline, pH 6.8, of a 1 mg/ml solution. This activity is the lowest concentration to agglutinate a 2% suspension of human blood group A erythrocytes after 1 hour incubation at 25 °C.
Biochem/physiol ActionsJacalin is extracted from Jack fruit seeds; a glycoprotein reported to bind human serum and secretory IgA.1 Jacalin is not blood group specific.2 The most effective inhibitor of hemagglutination is methyl α-D-galactopyranoside. The lectin is specific toward the Thomsen-Friedenreich (T) antigen, but has subtle differences in its combining site when compared to the site of Arachis hypogaea (peanut) agglutinin.3 Jacalin was also demonstrated to be a mitogen of T-lymphocytes.1
Preparation NotePurified by affinity chromatography.
Physical formContains phosphate buffer salts and NaCl
